Al BalidThe city
(located on the outskirts of modern-day Salalah) was
established in the 4th Century AH - 10th Century AD.
Archeological findings reveled remains of a great
rectangular shaped mosque surrounded by balconies from all
sides. Excavations have revealed Islamic pottery, Chinese
porcelain and several bronze coins some of them dating back
to the Islamic period, and other coins dating back to
Chinese civilization.

Khor Rori Samhuram
Excavations
have revealed a walled rectangular shaped town. Five stone
inscriptions were discovered written in Arabic southern
alphabet describing the establishment of the town, from
which it is evident that the town was built to ascertain the
domination of frankincense trade.

Lost City of Ubar (Shisr)Shisr, believed to be the
site of lost city of Ubar is to the northeast of Thumrayt.
Trade in frankincense and Arabian horses flourished in Shisr
and archaeologists believe the Queen of Sheba traveled to
the region to obtain supplies of frankincense.

Tawi Attair - the 'Well of Birds'
Tawi Attair - the 'Well of
Birds' - is a natural sinkhole over 100 meters wide and 211
meters deep and one of the deepest in the world. As the name
suggests, Tawi Attair is home to many species of birds that
can be seen swooping in and out of the sinkhole during
Khareef (monsoon) season.

Salalah Museum
This
interesting museum displays the Al Musnad writings, ancient
scriptures and coins dating back to the 11th Century. It
also has pottery dating back to the Middle Ages, traditional
irrigation tools and other artifacts.

Wadi Darbat
Wadi
Darbat is a natural park with majestic views of
waterfalls, lakes, mountains, caves, wildlife and lush
green vegetation. During the Khareef season there is a
100-meter waterfall and many cave chambers with old
stalactites and stalagmites. |
Mughsayl
Mughsayl boasts over four kilometers of magnificent sandy beach outlined by
sculptured cliffs with blow holes formed in the limestone rocks, where plumes of
water can reach a height of 30 meters or more. |
Nabi
Ayoub's TombThe Tomb of Nabi
Ayoub (also known as the prophet Job from the Old Testament) can be
found in the mountains about 40 kilometers from Salalah. The Tomb marks
the place where the remains of the Prophet can be found, and there is
also a small stone mosque believed to have been used by Nabi Ayoub for
prayers. |
Arzat
Springs
Arzat Springs has several natural fountains which
flow between the rocks and come together in a pond, which then flows through the
green gardens before finally falling into the sea. The area also has a beautiful
garden, which is open to visitors.

Jarzeez Springs
Jarzeez Springs is one of the most beautiful
springs in the Dhofar region. It is located in Atneen, about 14 kms from
Salalah. There are caves which can be explored and shaded areas for relaxing.
